The county of Los Angeles has scheduled a public hearing Wednesday, Feb. 8 on the draft environmental impact report (DEIR) for the proposed Boat Central Project in Marina del Rey.
The project site is at 13483 Fiji Way on Basin H in Marina del Rey. The approximately 4.25-acre site is comprised of two parcels referred to as Parcel 52 and Parcel GG. In addition to the landside parcels, a portion of the water that fronts the parcels is also part of the project.
The project consists of the development of a dry stack boat storage facility, mast-up boat storage, office and customer lounge, a boatwright office and repair yard for the county Sheriff’s Department, a public promenade and view park.
A notice of completion of the DEIR has been filed by the county, initiating the 60-day formal public review period, which will take place through March 5.
The boat storage structure would accommodate a maximum of 345 boats and 28 boat trailers. Due to the sloping topography of the project site, the height of the dry stack structure will be approximately 67 feet at Fiji Way and 75 feet along the water, county officials said. A crane will be utilized to move boats to and from the water and the structure.
The proposed storage structure will protrude into Basin H and overhang the water in an articulated manner by approximately 45 feet on the eastern side, and approximately 97 feet on the western side. Along Fiji Way, the structure frontage would be approximately 138 feet in length.
Outside of the boat storage structure, 30 dry storage spaces will be created for mast-up sailboats within a fenced area. A hoist to convey the sailboats to and from the water and a boat wash-down facility will be incorporated on site.
A new dock structure will also be constructed within Basin H to allow for boat queuing only, and no permanent wet slips are proposed. County officials said the project will require amendments to the Marina del Rey Local Coastal Program (LCP). The project site is the subject of a long-term lease.
The property lessee, MDR Boat Central, and the property owner, the county of Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors, are the co-applicants for this project.
A public hearing to receive public testimony on the DEIR and proposed project is scheduled before the county hearing examiner at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Burton Chace Park community building, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey.
A public hearing on the project before the Regional Planning Commission will take place at a future date.
All comments received by the closing of the public review period for the DEIR will be considered in the final EIR. Copies of the document are available for review online, listed under “County Project No. R2008-02340” at http://planning.lacounty.gov/case/all .
