A 56-year-old registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to viewing child pornography on a Santa Monica library computer has been sentenced to four years in state prison.
Richard Gibbons of Culver City was arrested Oct. 9 after a Santa Monica police officer wearing plain clothes saw Gibbons viewing child pornography on a computer at the city library at 2601 Main St., Sgt. Richard Lewis said.
A library employee had previously seen Gibbons looking at images that the employee believed were child pornography on a library computer Oct. 1 but the suspect left before he could be detained, Lewis said.
Police initiated an investigation and placed a plainclothes officer at the same library location, where Gibbons was observed a second time, Lewis said.
During a search of Gibbons’ personal property, he was found to be in possession of knit gloves and duct tape, police said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Gibbons for being in control of child pornography and Gibbons pleaded guilty to the charge Nov. 8, Lewis said.
Due to Gibbons’ status as a registered sex offender with a history of crimes involving children, the Santa Monica Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding Gibbons to contact Det. Leslie Trapnell at (310) 458-2256, Sgt. Renaldi Thruston at (310) 458-8414 or the Santa Monica Police Department (24 hours) at (310) 458-8495.
