The Walross IV, a Nissen 55 sailing vessel from the Academic Sailing Club of Berlin on a 43,000-mile circumnavigation, is in Marina del Rey until Friday, March 14th, for a layover for maintenance, provisioning and crew change.

The Walross IV, which began its layover Saturday, March 8th, is docked at The Boat Yard, 13555 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey.

Having set sail from Germany in October, Walross IV’s goal is to reach Beijing, China in time for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The vessel, functioning as a sailing envoy for the city of Berlin, is visiting the Olympic Sister Cities of London, Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles on its journey.

During the vessel’s layover in Marina del Rey, the crew is inviting a limited number of guests to join them for a short sail Thursday afternoon, March 13th. German Consul General, Dr. Christian Stocks, Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge and a representative from the Chinese Consulate General plan to attend the event.
