The fifth annual Lexus Santa Monica 5000 run benefiting the Saint John’s Health Center will take place Sunday, Sept. 12.

The 5K and 10K walk/run will additionally benefit the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation by raising money for local school fitness and athletic programs facing funding shortfalls due to the budget crisis, event organizers said.

The event includes a 2.7K dash for kids and the first-ever Santa Monica “Stroller Stride,” a 2.7K walk for parents pushing newborns and toddlers in strollers. Races begin at 7:30 a.m. with staggered start times.

All events take place on a scenic course that starts next to the beach at Ocean Park Boulevard and ends at the world famous Santa Monica Pier, where a free celebration will be held featuring live music, fitness demos and a sampling of sponsor products.

Free daycare will be offered on the pier for parents who want to participate in the run/walk. Activities for children include balloon animals, face painting, and a magician who works with live animals. In addition, all rides at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier will be open starting at 11 a.m. on race morning.

Organizers have partnered with local clubs to offer free training. Partnerships with LA Running Club, O2Max, K-Swiss, A Runner’s Circle and Moms in Motion offer training opportunities on Thursday and Saturday at locations throughout the area. Complete schedule of training is available at

Organizers are offering the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation discounted entry fees into the race to maximize its fundraising opportunities. Students, parents, teachers and others in the community are encouraged to register for the 5K/10K online and use the code “runwithED.” A $15 donation to the Education Foundation will be made in their name.

The Lexus Santa Monica 5000 is sponsored by K-Swiss, Clif Bar, Caltius, and Gerber ambulance service.
