Santa Monica College (SMC) finished third among 184 community colleges in the 2006-07 national Student Math League competition, believed to be the highest finish for the college since the contest began in 1970.

The SMC team was led by Alexandre Boulgakov, a Santa Monica High School junior who has taken courses at SMC. He placed third nationally among 1,918 students in the individual competition.

Chan Ieong Kuan, in his second year at SMC, finished fifth nationally.

The Student Math League competition, in which students are given multiple choice and written exams, is sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. One hundred thirty students from SMC participated in the math league.

“I am very proud of our students,” said math professor William Konya. “Their strong results show that students in mathematics at Santa Monica College do outstanding work.”
