RAFAEL VENEGAS

A former priest at St. Anne’s Church in Santa Monica has been sentenced to one year of probation in connection with the sexual battery of a 20-year-old woman, police said.
Rafael Venegas was additionally sentenced to one day in jail and 160 hours of community service and counseling through the archdiocese, which must contain a segment dealing with sexual compulsion, Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said. The sentence was issued after Venegas pleaded Nov. 9 to one count of misdemeanor battery and one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor, also a misdemeanor, Lewis said.
The Santa Monica Police Department initiated an investigation in July after a woman, who is not a parishioner of St. Anne’s, alleged that Venegas sexually assaulted her on church property in September 2011, Lewis said.
The Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office charged Venegas July 26 with one count of sexual battery and one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor.
