The Santa Monica High School Vikings softball team captured the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 4 Championship with a commanding 11-3 victory over North Torrance High School Saturday, June 5th.

It was the first CIF softball title for the Vikings under head coach Debbie Skaggs.

The Vikings (28-5) trailed 2-1 going into the top of the fifth inning, when Emma Woo blasted a grand slam to give Santa Monica a lead that it did not relinquish. Woo finished two-for-three with four runs batted in.

The second-seeded Vikings extended their advantage with six runs in the sixth inning to secure the championship over North Torrance (23-11).

Kelsey Horn, Kaile Nakao and Hailey Sheridan each added two hits for Santa Monica. Pitcher Celisha Walker threw five strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Santa Monica also won the Ocean League title this season with an undefeated league record of 10-0.

The CIF title added to a successful school year for girls sports at Samohi, where the girls basketball team captured its first CIF championship in Division 1 earlier this year.
