Santa Monica will put on its Fourth of July celebration a week early with “Celebrate America,” an outdoor festival and fireworks show honoring Independence Day at Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field Saturday, June 27th.
The event is free but donations are welcome.
The celebration — the only one of its kind in Santa Monica — will feature a fireworks show and entertainment by rhythm-and-blues performers, Derek Bordeaux Group.
Most of the festivities will be held at SMC’s Corsair Field, but new this year will be musical entertainment on SMC’s new Quad, located near the athletic facility in the center of campus.
Attendees may bring picnic dinners or purchase food from one of the many vendors. However, because there is a new synthetic turf surface at Corsair Field, eating and drinking will be allowed only in the stands or anywhere else on the college grounds.
The festivities will begin with musical entertainment on the Quad at 6:30 p.m. The gates to Corsair Field, 16th Street and Pico Boulevard, will open at 7 p.m. and the Derek Bordeaux Group is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. The fireworks — by Pyro Spectaculars — are scheduled at dusk.
Alcoholic beverages, glass containers, barbecues and fireworks are prohibited.
Presenting sponsors of the event are the City of Santa Monica and the SMC Associated Students.
