A Santa Monica man has been sentenced to three years in state prison for setting fire to his vehicle in an attempt to collect insurance money, police said.
Following his arrest by Santa Monica police last year, Sidney Porter was convicted January 13th on one count of arson for intentionally setting fire to his car to try to collect an insurance payment, Santa Monica Sgt. Jay Trisler said.
Police were called to the 1100 block of Ninth Street March 6th where a 2006 Dodge Magnum was set on fire. Santa Monica firefighters extinguished the blaze and determined that the fire was a result of arson, Trisler said.
Police had collected evidence from the scene and turned it over to detectives, who after an extensive follow-up investigation, determined that the suspect was Porter, the burned vehicle’s owner, Trisler said.
