A 29-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested by Santa Monica police Dec. 6 in connection with an attempted kidnapping of a teenage girl two days earlier.
Jefferdick Joseph Vega, a parolee, was arrested after Santa Monica police officers were called at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 to the 800 block of Ocean Park Boulevard regarding a report of a suspicious suspect who was seen knocking on doors of various residences, Sgt. Richard Lewis said.
As officers were checking the immediate area, they saw an older model Toyota Previa minivan that matched the description of the vehicle suspected in a Dec. 4 attempted kidnapping, Lewis said. During the incident, a 17-year-old girl was grabbed by a man who was standing by his parked vehicle and allegedly tried to force the girl into the car, police said. The girl was able to get away but suffered minor injuries in the attack, police said.
Police determined Dec. 6 that the vehicle was stolen and conducted a traffic stop in the 800 block of Maple Street, where the driver was detained, Lewis said. During the subsequent investigation, the driver was identified as the suspect in the attempted kidnapping and was arrested, Lewis said.
Vega was booked for kidnapping, vehicle theft and parole violation, Lewis said. He is not eligible for bail.
Santa Monica police are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Vega to contact Det. Chad Goodwin at (310) 458-8942, Sgt. Ira Rutan at (310) 458-8959 or the Santa Monica Police Department (24 hours) at (310) 458-8495.
