The Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission has been recognized by the California Association of Park and Recreation Commissioners and Board Members for its commitment to providing park space in the community.
The commission was presented with the association’s 2012 Award for Outstanding Commission during an awards banquet March 7.
According to the park association, the Santa Monica commission was honored for its ability to tackle tough problems and successfully find innovative solutions to establishing more open and green space for the community.
In 2012, the commission addressed efforts in support of bike safety, bike sharing, pedestrian safety and green streets. The commission also guided the development of two new parks in Santa Monica’s Civic Center area, designed by James Corner Field Operations.
“We are deeply honored to be recognized by our peers from communities throughout California,” said Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission Chair Phil Brock. “Preserving and promoting fair use of parks and open space in the sixth most densely populated city in the state is no easy task. We could not do it without the hard work and dedication of city staff and the very involved citizens of Santa Monica,”
The California Association of Park and Recreation Commissioners and Board Members is a nonprofit organization of appointed and elected officials who advise their communities on matters relevant to parks, recreation and public access throughout the state. The association recognizes exceptional projects and leaders each year.
