The Santa Monica Rugby Club under 19 boys team has kicked off its season with two wins over teams from Pasadena and Channel Islands.

The Santa Monica squad started the 2010 season with a 37-0 win over Pasadena Saturday, January 30th at Webster Middle School in West Los Angeles.

Returning scrumhalf Wendell Lazaro led the Dolphins with two tries in the game. Scores by flanker Sean McKenna and hooker Nadav Djiji added to the total of five tries for the Santa Monica forwards. Fullback Alonso Ordaz also scored a try and added two points with a successful conversion kick.

“We knew we’d find a way to score but I’m really proud of our defense not allowing Pasadena on the scoreboard,” Coach Jamie Cullen said.

“We’re very excited about our prospects this year. We have a lot of new players that round out last year’s core group.”

The Dolphins then defeated Channel Islands of the Orca Rugby Club 17-5 Saturday, February 6th. The Santa Monica club got on the board early with a try from captain Djiji. Ordaz made the conversion and added a penalty kick later in the first half to put the Dolphins up 10-0 at halftime.

McKenna added a try in the second half to clinch the victory. The win puts Santa Monica at the top of the Southern California Youth Rugby (SCYR) North division.

The Santa Monica under 16 boys were also victorious over Orca, 27-15, giving them a win in their first league match of the season.
