The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District school board approved a $113,692,641 budget for the 2007-08 fiscal year at its meeting Thursday, June 28th, which only four board members attended.

School board president Kathy Wisnicki and board members Marie Leon-Vazquez and Kelly Pye were not at the meeting.

While the district’s revenue is projected at $113,692,641, the expenses are projected at $114,525,927, which means the district will be spending $833,286 more than they’re taking in.

General fund revenues include:

… $4,427,306 from the federal government;

… $17,875,293 from other state revenue;

… $10,494,000 from parcel taxes;

… $6,736,184 from the City of Santa Monica; and

… $4,269,380 from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and other local income.

General fund expenditures include:

… $99,154,138 for salaries and employee benefits;

… $4,016,965 for books and supplies; and

… $11,194,836 for services and other operating expenses.

The budget reflects a decrease of 23.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers, as a result of an anticipated decline in student enrollment of 181.

The decrease in teachers will take place through natural attrition, school board members and district superintendent Dianne Talarico have said.

“No one is becoming unemployed,” Talarico assured. “No one is losing their job. That’s the truth.”

The budget does not include $530,000 — a proposed increase in base funds — that the district is unsure it will get from the City of Santa Monica.

The $530,000 would go to fund the district’s Master Facility Use Agreement, but the city is holding the money in reserve until various unresolved issues are addressed.

The school board meeting was the last for board member Emily Bloomfield, who was elected to the school board in 2002. At the meeting, she was commended for her time on the board.

Bloomfield is off to Washington, D.C. with her family, where her husband has accepted a new position.

Applications are now available to fill Bloomfield’s vacancy on the board, either at www.smmusd.org or in the superintendent’s office at the district headquarters, 1651 16th Street, Santa Monica.

The deadline for completed applications is 5 p.m., Monday, July 9th.
