parcel tax face Sun., July 31st deadline
A renewal form is to be mailed in May to all Santa Monica senior citizens who previously applied for and received an exemption to the Measure S parcel tax — designed to provide funding for public schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
Voters in Santa Monica and Malibu approved the Measure S parcel tax two years ago — a six-year parcel tax of $225 per year per parcel which contains a provision to exempt senior citizens who are 65 years old by Thursday, June 30th, this year.
Seniors can be exempt from the tax if they own and occupy their property as a primary residence and apply for the exemption annually.
The renewal form changes every year. Seniors seeking the exemption need to complete, sign and return this year’s form by Sunday, July 31st.
Seniors who have never applied for a senior exemption can request an application from the school district.
First-time applications can be requested by calling (310) 450-8338 extension 269.
Applications can also be printed from the school district Web site at www.smmusd.org by following the “Senior Exemption” link to the “Application for Senior Exemption.”
First-time applications are considered complete when they are filled out, signed and accompanied by proof of age and proof of property ownership.
First-time applications should be mailed to Dawn, Santa Monica-Malibu USD, 1651 16th St., Santa Monica, CA 90404-3891 no later than 5 p.m. Sunday, July 31st.
