The Santa Monica College Corsair student newspaper won 23 awards — including general excellence and four first-place honors — in the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern California competition.

The awards were won by staff members under the direction of spring semester editor Maliha Jafri and current editor Aaron Howell, who won the editor in chief recognition award.

The Corsair faculty advisor is Barbara Baird.

With Jafri as editor, the Corsair won general excellence in the mail-in category.

Winning first place honors were Geoff Dunn for new photo, Chad Uyeno for feature photo, Morgan Genser for sports action photo, and Cam Sanders for photo essay.

Uyeno, Dunn, Jafri, and Howell also won second, third, and fourth place awards and honorable mentions in various categories.

Also winning second, third, and fourth place awards and honorable mentions in various categories were Andi Liu, Geoff Dunn, Sid Abbazi, Jeff Higley, Lauren Ciancimino, Jose Herrera, Diana Guillen, Elsa Keslassy, Alex DiStefano, Jennifer Lepkowski, and Rachel Hadlock-Piltz.

In the on-the-spot competition, Uyeno, Howell, Kyosti Kauppinen, Peter Switzer, and Cindi Benson won second and third place awards and honorable mentions.
