Santa Monica College’s Corsair newspaper won a record 35 awards ñ including general excellence and two first place honors ñ in the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ Southern California competition.

The awards reflect achievements of the staff under spring semester editor Marie-Claude Hamel and current editor Komfort Akyempon. The faculty advisor is Barbara Baird.

Hamel was also one of two students in California to win a $750 Los Angeles Times scholarship.

Among the current Corsair staff that won awards in the on-the-spot competition was Margaret Molloy for first place feature photo.

Second, third and honorable mention awards went to Hamel, Molloy, Deborah Carson, Andi Liu, Andrei Lucien, Jonpaul Balak, Jonathan Derby, Maliha Jafri, Sophia Silver, Alex Arpiza and Marcia Brito.

The spring semester staff that won awards in the mail-in category includes Blair Clarkson for first place news story.

Second, third and honorable mention awards went to Lucien, Molloy, Clarkson, Hamel, Marie Jauffret, Raul Vasquez, Matthew Wilken, Josh Hill, Mark Sandstrom, Nicholas Chen, Morgan Genser, Christoph Seitz, Devon Fleury, Julian Jenkins, Jesus Aguirre, Rachel Hadlock-Piltz and Jhosef Hern.

The spring semester staff also won an award for inside page design.
