Five Santa Monica College transfer students have won UCLA Regents Scholarships that the students will use when they begin classes at the Westwood campus Thursday, September 30th.

Julia Dobrovolsky, Alexander Gabrovsky, Kristen Glasgow, Jiuan-Ru Jennifer Lai and Christoph Seitz will each receive $5,500 a year with additional funds available based on need.

The recipients were selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and exceptional future promise.

UCLA officials told Santa Monica College officials that it is ìhighly unusualî for one community college to have so many students receive the ìprestigiousî scholarships.

ìIt”s rare for there to be five scholarship recipients from one school in one year,î said Gail Ishino, UCLA financial aid office assistant director. ìIt”s quite an accomplishment.î

The Regents Scholarship Program, established in 1962, is considered one of the highest honors awarded to students attending the university.

Dobrovolsky and Gabrovsky will study English; Glasgow, art history; Lai, computer science; and Seitz, political science.
