Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Jeremy S. Pal and longtime Santa Monica businessman and community service honoree Edward A. Guerboian have been named the winners of the 2008 Santa Monica College (SMC) Alumni Recognition Award.

The two men will be recognized at the SMC commencement, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 10th, at Corsair Field, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica.

Pal will receive the SMC Alumni Recognition Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement and Guerboian is being honored with the Alumni Recognition Award for Distinguished Community Service.

Pal was a contributing researcher on a global warming study that earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He is an assistant professor of civil engineering and environmental science at Loyola Marymount University and was one of the contributing authors on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an international collaboration of scientists that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore.

After receiving an Associate of Arts degree at SMC in 1991, Pal earned a bachelor’s degree with honors at LMU and completed master’s and doctorate degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in civil and environmental engineering.

At LMU, he teaches classes in water resources, hydrology, computer modeling, engineering analysis and surveying. Prior to joining the LMU faculty in 2001, Pal worked for the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, an agency that operates under two United Nations agencies in Trieste, Italy, with the mission to foster the growth of research in developing nations.

Guerboian is an Armenian born in Cairo, Egypt who migrated to the United States at the age of 17 after the death of his father. He settled in Santa Monica and attended Santa Monica High School adult classes, followed by Santa Monica College, where he studied primarily business and English. In 1978 he started Readers Fine Jewelers in Santa Monica.

Guerboian has become a prominent and active community member of Santa Monica, an SMC spokesman said. He is a distinguished past president and past executive board member of the Santa Monica Kiwanis, has served as the chairman of the Kiwanis Charities Foundation and was the winner of the Legion of Honor Award.

Guerboian is an executive board member of the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club; a member of the President’s Circle of the Santa Monica College Foundation; a member of the SMC General Advisory Board; and a governing board member of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

He received the Santa Monica Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award in 1990 and the 2006 Lions Club Community Service Award for his dedication to the community.
