Competing against 191 community colleges, Santa Monica College recently earned its highest team finish ever -second place – in the 2011 national Student Math League competition.

The SMC team’s top competitor was Ka Man Mak, who finished 11th nationally out of 2,093 individual participants. She and her teammates Xiaomeng Ren and Tiancheng Zhao all had scores in the Top 20 nationally in Round Two.

The Student Math League competition, in which students are given multiple choice exams, is sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

A total of 229 students from SMC participated in at least one round of the math league, an SMC spokesperson said.

The team is coached by SMC math professors William Konya and Sam Soleymani, with assistance from Peter Lee.
