The sixth grade girls volleyball team at Saint Anastasia School in Playa del Rey captured the division title in the Pac Ten Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) league last month.
After earning a 7-1 record in the regular season, the St. Anastasia Panthers faced rival St. Paul the Apostle school in the semi-finals of the playoffs, taking the victory in three games.
This set up the final match against American Martyrs where the Panthers again emerged victorious in three games.
Coach Matty Morisaki was pleased with how the team has continued to improve over the past few seasons.
“Over the course of the season, I have seen our team grow in many areas,” Morisaki said.
“I saw them learn about themselves as well as playing as a team and trusting each other. Our girls learned that respect for themselves and others, sacrifice and teamwork are all important ingredients for the success we had this season.”
St. Anastasia Principal Rosemary Connolly said, “Not only did our sixth-graders win it all, we had a fine showing with our fifth grade team, who finished the season 7-1.
“I’m proud of the sportsmanship and athleticism our players showed, and look forward to continued success in our program under the guidance of coach Morisaki.”
