A bomb squad determined that a “suspicious” suitcase found at Cowan Avenue Elementary School in Westchester early Wednesday, March 5th, posed no threat, school officials said.

The bomb squad was called to the school, at 7615 Cowan Ave., after the suspicious suitcase was discovered in front of the school’s main building at about 7 a.m., said Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Monica Carazo.

Staff and students at the school, as well as incoming school buses, were diverted to Orville Wright Middle School in Westchester during the incident.

The bomb squad examined the suitcase with bomb-sniffing dogs and determined that it was safe, Carazo said. The suitcase was found to have chess pieces inside, she said.

The school was reopened to staff and students by 9:15 a.m.
