The Argonaut has received a commendation from the California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA) for an entry into the 2009 CNPA Better Newspapers Contest.
News reporter Gary Walker was selected as a contest finalist for his entry in the Public Service category for California weekly newspapers with a circulation of 25,001 and above. Walker’s submission was chosen among the top ten percent and advanced to the final Blue Ribbon judging of the contest.
Walker was commended for his November 2008 article on direct mail delivery service being suspended at the Mar Vista Gardens housing complex in Del Rey following a fatal shooting and complaints of unattended dogs attacking letter carriers.
Three months after the mail service was suspended and one month following Walker’s article, direct mail service was reinstated at Mar Vista Gardens. Walker’s subsequent article reported that Congresswoman Maxine Waters and postal commissioner Ruth Goldway intervened to help restore the service.
The Better Newspapers Contest recognizes the most outstanding journalistic achievements published by California daily and weekly newspapers. The contest covered entries between April 1st, 2008 and October 31st, 2009.
