Spring is here, along with the Christian holidays of Easter and Good Friday, and Judaism’s Purim. Local religious institutions and secular groups have events planned Thursday, March 20th through Sunday, March 30th. Here is a guide to some area functions.

Purim in Persia — The Jewish event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20th, at the Marina International Hotel, 4200 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey.

There will be a Megillah reading, a Persian-style dinner buffet, live music, a Purim masquerade and a raffle for all kids and adults in costume.

The event is $18 for adults, $10 for children and $36 for families.

Congregational Church of the Messiah — The Congregational Church of the Messiah will begin its Easter events with a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. March 20th. The evening will include Holy Communion, the choir singing “O Come and Mourn” and a performance by a French horn soloist.

The Easter Sunday worship service March 23rd will begin at 10 a.m. with a violinist and cellist, as well as the choir singing “Easter Alleluia.”

Pilgrim Lutheran Church — The church will hold a Good Friday Worship service at 7 p.m. March 21st.

On Easter morning, March 23rd, there will be a combined worship at 10 a.m. followed by an Easter egg hunt and special fellowship.

Westchester Lutheran Church — Holy Week for this church includes a Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. March 20th, with Communion and a choir concert.

The Easter celebration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, March 23rd, with a breakfast and continue with “Festival Worship Service” at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

St. Anastasia Catholic Church — St. Anastasia Catholic Church will begin its four days of worship at 7:30 p.m. on Holy Thursday, March 20th, including an evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament following liturgy.

Good Friday will include music and quiet prayer at noon March 21st, Stations of the Cross at 1 p.m., celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 1:45 p.m. and Stations of the Cross and Holy Communion at 7:30 p.m.

There will be an Easter Vigil Mass at 8 p.m. Holy Saturday, March 22nd. On Easter Sunday, March 23rd, Masses will take place throughout the day, with the first at 7:30 a.m. and the last at 7:30 p.m. The 9 a.m. mass will feature an adult folk choir.

Westchester United Methodist Church — Westchester United Methodist Church will commemorate the Last Supper with music at 7 p.m. Holy Thursday, March 20th. Every Sunday the church has a 10 a.m. worship service in English and a 1 p.m. service in Fijian.

Covenant Presbyterian Church — Covenant Presbyterian Church’s Holy Week Services include a Maundy Thursday communion service at 7:30 p.m. March 20th. A celebration of the Resurrection will begin at 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, March 23rd.

First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica — The First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica’s Holy Week includes a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. March 20th; a Meditative TaizÈ Service for Good Friday at 7:30 p.m. March 21st; a Jacaranda Music Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 22nd, and Easter Sunday worship services at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. March 23rd.

Good Friday, March 21st, will also include a morning prayer at 8 a.m.; 11 a.m. Procession with the Cross from the First Baptist Church (8540 La Tijera Blvd. in Westchester) to St. Jerome; an ecumenical service at noon in St. Jerome; and other services at 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Holy Nativity Episcopal Church — The Holy Nativity Episcopal Church will commemorate Maundy Thursday with an Agape Meal at 7 p.m. Good Friday, March 21st, will include the Stations of the Cross at 6 p.m. and a service at 7 p.m. The Great Easter Vigil will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 22nd.

Easter Sunday, March 23rd, includes the Holy Eucharist [said] at 8 a.m.; Easter Egg Hunt on the Lawn at 9:30 a.m.; and Holy Eucharist [sung] at 10:15 a.m.

Vineyard Christian Fellowship Westside — Vineyard Christian Fellowship Westside will commemorate Good Friday, March 21st, at 5:30 p.m. with an English service and a Spanish service at 8 p.m.

The First Baptist Church – Westchester — The First Baptist Church is calling its Easter Sunday services March 23rd “He Has Truly Risen.” The day will include an 8:30 a.m. continental breakfast, 9:45 a.m. Sunday School and 11 a.m. worship service.

The First United Methodist Church — This church will begin its Easter events with a Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. March 20th.

The Good Friday service will start at 12:15 p.m. March 21st, and a Labyrinth Walk will follow from 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Easter Sunday service March 23rd will be at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

EASTER EGG HUNTS:

Hope Chapel del Rey — For the sixth year, Hope Chapel del Rey in conjunction with the Westchester Recreation Center and Westchester merchants, will sponsor its annual “EGGSTRAVAGANZA,” Saturday, March 22nd. Admission is free and gates open at 10 a.m. Kids aged two to 12 are welcome to hunt for 30,000 candy-filled eggs, enjoy game booths, moon bounces, puppet shows, live music and police and fire units. At the end of the event, a free drawing will be held to give away prizes. Also, the Easter Bunny will make an appearance.

The church will have an “Easter in the Park” at 8 a.m. Sunday, March 23rd, at Westchester Park, 7000 Manchester Ave. The morning will include music by Inglewood’s Learning to Live EV Church gospel choir; “stories about God’s power” given by the Del Rey Hills Evangelical Church; and prayer offered at the Hope Chapel del Rey prayer tent.

The Venice Beach Recreation Center — The recreation center is holding several Easter egg hunts Saturday, March 22nd:

For ages three and under, the egg hunt will begin at 10:30 a.m.

For ages four to five, the hunt will start at 11 a.m.

For ages six to eight, the hunt will begin at 11:30 a.m.

For ages nine to 11, the hunt will begin at noon.

The egg hunts are free, but participants should bring their own Easter basket or bag.
