THE VENICE ARTS GALLERY will hold its 2013 Student Culminating Exhibition featuring student artworks from 2012-13 workshops such as this untitled photo (above) by 17-year-old Angela Francis.

The Venice Arts Gallery will present its 2013 Student Culminating Exhibition, featuring student films, photographs, animations, comics, as well as mixed- and multi-media pieces created in the 2012-13 workshops, beginning Saturday, May 11 through June 15.
An opening reception is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. May 11 at the gallery, 1702 Lincoln Blvd., Venice.
A special screening of students’ films and animations and a brief program will take place at 1:15 p.m. on the big screen. A potluck reception with food and beverages for families, students, mentors and show attendees will also take place during the exhibition.
Each year over 400 students participate in the art mentoring workshops, which allow them to expand their creativity and learn about visual storytelling, a Venice Arts spokesperson said. The workshops are free for low-income families and give students a chance to work with teaching artists and high-quality professional equipment.
Venice Arts offers education and mentoring programs in documentary photography, filmmaking and multimedia, primarily targeting low-income youth.
In addition to showcasing the work of students over the past year, the exhibit also serves to honor graduating seniors, many of whom have been taking classes with Venice Arts for years and now plan to attend college, some as the first in their families to do so.
