After turning their season around to win another Western League Championship, the Venice High School Gondoliers were hoping to add to the success with their first Los Angeles City Section Championship.
The Gondoliers kicked off the city playoffs on the right path with a 25-20 first-round victory at home over Carson High School, but their run to the city title game came to an end in the quarterfinals Wednesday, November 26th, after they were shut out 31-0 by host San Pedro High (11-1).
Second-seeded San Pedro also stomped Venice’s city title hopes two years ago in the playoff semifinals.
In this season’s match-up, San Pedro scored an early touchdown in the first quarter and added another score in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. The Pirates didn’t look back from there and cruised to the quarterfinal victory with two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Venice had won six consecutive games prior to the loss, after opening the season with five consecutive losses. The Gondos finished undefeated in league play and secured another league crown with a 24-12 win over Westchester High.
Venice ended the season with an overall record of 6-6.
