Veterans Day is Saturday, November 11th, and programs to honor United States military personnel have been scheduled in Playa del Rey and Venice.
ELKS VETERANS DAY — Westside Veterans Memorial Committee, the Westchester Elks and the Westchester Rotary Club have organized a celebration of Veterans Day, scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, November 11th, at the Westchester Elks Lodge, 8025 Manchester Ave., Westchester. Tickets are $9.
The event will feature a turkey and roast beef dinner followed by live entertainment and a ceremony that starts at 7:30 p.m.
Vocalist Bobbette Williams will be the featured musical entertainment. Williams plans to sing a “medley of patriotic songs,” organizers say.
Additionally, Curt Curtiss, president of the Westside Veterans Memorial Committee, will recognize a distinguished local veteran with the award of “Veteran of the Year.” Bob Smith, former president of the Westchester Rotary Club, will give a presentation on the origin of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Lee Ezzes, exalted ruler of the Westchester Elks, will conduct an MIA/POW Vacant Chair Ceremony in remembrance of the soldiers who went missing and remain unaccounted for in recent wars. Tom Winfrey of the Airport Lions, will handle the ceremonial duties.

VETERANS DAY JAZZ — Commander’s Jazz Ensemble, a wing of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West, which performed at Muscle Beach Venice for Memorial Day, returns to Venice for a performance marking Veterans Day.
The military musicians from Travis Air Force Base in northern California, will perform from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, November 10th, at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice. Admission is free.
The 18-piece group, comprised of active-duty Air Force members, plays music from the 1940s big-band heydays along with some contemporary jazz numbers.
The Commander’s Jazz Ensemble has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and on The Tonight Show.
The concert event has been organized by Muscle Beach bodybuilding and physique contest organizer Joe Wheatley, with support from the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and sponsors.
