The city of Santa Monica will hold its 19th Annual Juneteenth Celebration from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at Virginia Avenue Park, 2200 Virginia Ave., Santa Monica.
Entertainment will include the sounds of rhythm and blues, gospel and samba. The festival will feature Grammy Award-nominee Ray Brooks & the Blues Masters Band, as well as Kehinde Otis Johnson’s Stilt Walker Troupe, Samba Samba Dance, Marching Thunder Drum Line, Lava Bai Drum Circle and more.
The cast from “Jubilee” will also debut their music and “Sankofa” story, which is reminiscent of the time of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Another highlight of this year’s event will be a panel of scholars engaging in dialogue on the relevance of the United States Constitution’s 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments from the time they were written until today, event organizers said.
Among other activities will be crafts, face painting, games and an interactive building project with the Rosie’s Girls group. There will also be a cultural arts marketplace and a display of classic and antique cars, as well as a “Texas-style” barbecue and other foods.
