A series of local volunteer activities are scheduled Saturday, May 1st as part of the Westside Day of Service.

The Office of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is once again partnering with Big Sunday for the events, some of which have a special emphasis on honoring the military and veterans, and volunteers are being sought.

Events within the Argonaut coverage area include:

Give back at Mar Vista Gardens (Project #394)

Volunteers will clean the much-used recreation center at the Mar Vista Gardens in Del Rey. There will also be a chance for participants to write letters to soldiers stationed overseas, reminding them that they are remembered and appreciated. All age groups are invited.

Build a butterfly garden at Ocean Charter School (Project #220)

Volunteers will help Ocean Charter School, a Los Angeles Unified School District public charter school, and Walgrove Elementary, plant a hummingbird and butterfly garden of California native plants and other drought tolerant species.

The project will not only provide a respite of nature in

an urban environment, but it will also provide teachers a lab for science curriculum. The event is recommended for ages eight and older.

Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Walgrove Elementary, 1630 Walgrove Ave., Mar Vista.

Ballona Wetlands clean-up (Project #400)

The Ballona Institute is coordinating an event at the Ballona Wetlands’ Grand Canal Lagoon, where volunteers will be helping with an important ecological restoration of a historical lagoon ecosystem. Volunteers will be weeding, planting native plants, watering and cleaning debris from the city sensitive habitat area.

Also, volunteers will be involved with helping to fix up a native plant nursery on the adjacent school campus of Westside Leadership Magnet School that serves the ecological restoration of the wetlands. All ages are invited.

Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Washington Boulevard Bridge at Strongs Drive, across from 311 Washington Blvd.

Brighten up historic Fire Station #62 (Project #399)

Volunteers will help clean graffiti and trash from the former fire station property in Mar Vista, as well as do some weeding and landscaping. All ages are invited.

Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at former Fire Station 62, 3631 Centinela Ave., Mar Vista.
