For the first time in its 56-year history, the Westchester Babe Ruth baseball league is sending two teams to the Babe Ruth World Series.
The under-15 team earned a World Series berth in Virginia after defeating the Northern California representative, Tri Valley, 8-7, while the under-14 Westchester team advanced to the World Series in Moses Lake, Wash. with a 7-2 defeat of Hawaii
in the Pacific Southwest Regional Championship.
Last year as 14-year-olds, the current under-15 team defeated Tri-Valley during its World Series run that resulted in a third-place finish.
The Westchester 15U team hails from several neighborhoods in west Los Angeles county including Westchester, Playa del Rey, Santa Monica, Culver City, Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, Ladera Heights, West Athens and Inglewood. The tournament team includes Cristian Amador, Reggie Castro, Isaiah Cepeda, Anthony Chavez, Grant Craddolph, Lawrence “LJ” Gilliam, Nick Goff, AJ Inatsugu, Carlos Jacobo, Matthew Kanfer, Cameren Landreth, Mario Morales, Uly Perez, Jay Sterner, and Jeremiah Thomure. The under-15 team is managed by John Lopatto and coached by Alex Galaviz and Barry Craddolph.
The members of the Westchester under-14 team include Brandon Brown, Aaron Greenfield, Dominic Johnson, Kane Kutler, Dailin Lee, Derek Marshall, Nolan Martinez, Saul Martinez, Justin Morris, Kelvin Murillo, Jonathan Phelps, Dylan Sledge, Eli Saucedo, Kailin Woodard and Jason Zeidman. The team is managed by Hector Zamora and is coached by Chris Lynch and Josh Fernandez.
World Series play begins Saturday, Aug. 17.
