Having finished third in the final rankings of the nation’s best boys basketball teams, Westchester High School was presented with the National Guard National Ranking trophy during a pep rally at the school Wednesday, May 12th.

Westchester High, which captured Los Angeles City Section and State Division I championships this past season, is one of ten schools to be honored.

The National Guard is the presenting partner of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions, which is in its fourth year of recognizing some of the best boys basketball teams throughout the country. The Comets were also honored last year when the school finished number one in the nation.

This year’s team compiled an overall record of 32-3 on the way to the top spot in the state.

In attendance at the award ceremony were Alonia Alexander, Westchester High School athletic director; Ed Azzam, head basketball coach; Stan Granch, MaxPreps territorial manager, and Kenneth Kinney of the California National Guard.

The MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the National Guard recognizes the finest high school basketball teams in the country through various celebrations and formal ceremonies. The tour was inaugurated in 2005 and honored ten premier football programs.

Representatives from the National Guard present each basketball team with the National Guard National Ranking trophy in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments throughout the 2009-10 high school basketball season.
