The Westchester Family YMCA swim team, the Orcas, ended its spring/summer season on a high note by sending two swimmers to the YMCA Nationals at the University of Maryland and three swimmers to the Summer Junior Olympics in Santa Clarita.
Teresa Lincoln and Sarah Tuggy competed at the YMCA Nationals and Claire Funderburk, Tara Prentice and Nichol Walloch swam at the Summer Junior Olympics.
Competing in the Girls 15-and-up 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke, Lincoln finished in the top 100 for all three events, while her teammate and fellow breaststroke swimmer, Tuggy, had a strong finish in the Girls 15-and-up 100-meter breast and placed in the top 100 in the 200-meter breast.
“We could not be more proud of how our team finished this season,” said coaches Jennifer Fusco and Gaku Ito. “When our season ended, we had both YMCA Nationals swimmers and Junior Olympic swimmers competing on opposite sides of the country in the same week.”
At the Junior Olympics, Funderburk competed in the girls ten-and-under 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter free, 50-meter free, 100-meter backstroke, 50-meter back and 100-meter breast, making consolation finals in all but the 100-meter free.
Walloch competed in the girls 11-to-12 100 and 50-meter back, finishing 19th and 17th, respectively.
Prentice competed in the girls ten-and-under 100-meter butterfly, 50-meter fly, 200-meter free, 100-meter free and 100-meter back, making consolation finals in the 100-meter fly by placing 16th.
“That is the highest place made for our team at JOs) Junior Olympics) this year in finals,” said Fusco. “Also, with only three swimmers competing, we scored a total of 30.5 points placing our team 37th out of 54 teams.”
“Sending swimmers to the Y-Nationals was a long-term team goal” the coaches said. “With our next season about to begin, we have high hopes of returning to Y-Nationals in Florida in the spring, as well as spring Junior Olympics with even more swimmers.”
Practices for the upcoming season are scheduled to begin September 4th and competitions begin in October.
The first meet of the YMCA League season, hosted by the Orcas, is scheduled the weekend of October 13th and 14th at Loyola Marymount University.
