Jake Wood, a longtime California Yacht Club member and owner of Windward Yacht & Repair Inc. in Marina del Rey, died March 29th of heart complications, friends said. He was 73.
A funeral service was held April 7th at the Church of the Epiphany in Oak Park, where Wood lived.
Born April 15th, 1933 in Rexburg, Idaho, Wood was well-known for his sailing adventures on his 61-foot boat Sorcery, and later on his own company-built 82-foot boat, also named Sorcery, a maxi-boat designed by Gary Mull, friends said.
Wood was known throughout the sailing world for having campaigned Sorcery in most of the premier races in California and internationally, friends said.
In the first race of the sailing season January 6th, the Berger/ Stein Series, Wood’s Sorcery captured first place in the A2 class for big boats.
Wood was a member of the California Yacht Club for about 40 years, friends said.
