A 40-year-old woman died after she was struck by a Metro bus while walking in a crosswalk at Second Street and Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica Wednesday morning, March 7th, Metro officials said.
The woman, identified by the county coroner as Jannette Mareck, a transient, was walking in the crosswalk near Santa Monica Place at 8:45 a.m. when a Metro bus turned onto Second Street and struck her, said Rick Jager, Metro spokesman.
Mareck was pronounced dead at the scene, Jager said.
The male driver of the bus — a Metro Line 4, which travels on Santa Monica Boulevard between Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles — was “quite shaken up” following the accident, Jager said.
The driver, who has been with Metro for over nine years and works out of Division 6 in Venice, sought crisis counseling and was placed off-duty with pay, Jager said.
“It’s a very unfortunate accident that occurred and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family,” Jager said.
The Santa Monica Police Department is investigating the accident.
A drug and alcohol test has been conducted on the bus driver, but Jager said it is “too early to speculate” if any disciplinary action will be taken on the driver.
