Democratic incumbents and candidates running for open seats on the Democratic Party ticket are expected to win local district races in the Tuesday, November 7th, general election.

Local races in The Argonaut coverage area are not competitive because registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by wide percentages and polls indicate Democrats are leading in the Westside.

STATE ASSEMBLY:

n DISTRICT 41 includes Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area and the coastline from Santa Monica to the Santa Clara River beyond Oxnard.

Julia Brownley, a Democrat and president of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board of education, is running against Republican Tony Dolz and Libertarian Conrad Stefan Frankowski.

Dolz is a national security analyst and founding member of the Minuteman Project. Frankowski is a human resources executive and past president of the Wall Street Employment Managers.

n DISTRICT 47 includes a sliver of Del Rey from Centinela Avenue to the San Diego Freeway (405 Freeway) and an area from Culver City to South Los Angeles.

Karen Bass, the incumbent Democrat, is running against Republican businessman Jeffers MacArthur Dodge.

n DISTRICT 51 includes the southeast parts of Del Rey, Playa Vista, parts of Westchester and an area from Inglewood to Lawndale and Gardena.

Inglewood City Councilman Curren D. Price, a Democrat, is running against Ross Moen, a Republican and retired police lieutenant, and Libertarian Carl M. “Marty” Swinney, a certified radiology technician.

n DISTRICT 53 includes Venice, Mar Vista, Marina del Rey, northeast parts of Del Rey, Playa del Rey, parts of Westchester and communities south to Redondo Beach.

Incumbent Ted W. Lieu, a Democrat, is running against Republican physician/businesswoman Mary Jo Ford, Peace and Freedom Party candidate Karl Abrams, a college professor, and Green Party candidate Peter Luke Thottam, an attorney.

STATE SENATE:

n DISTRICT 26 includes a sliver of Del Rey from Walnut Avenue to the San Diego Freeway (405 Freeway) and an area from West Los Angeles to Hyde Park.

State Assemblyman Mark Ridley-Thomas, a Democrat from the 48th Assembly District, is running against Libertarian Bud Raymond, a production sound technician.

n DISTRICT 28 includes Venice, Mar Vista, Marina del Rey, nearly all of Del Rey, Playa Vista, Playa del Rey, nearly all of Westchester, communities down the coast to Redondo Beach then east to include all or parts of Carson, San Pedro, Long Beach and Wilmington.

State Assemblywoman Jenny Oropeza, a Democrat from the 55th Assembly District, is running against Republican businesswoman Cherryl Liddle and Libertarian small business owner Peter “Pedro” De Baets.

STATE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION: The State Board of Equalization is California’s elected tax commission and oversees the administration of more than two dozen tax and fee programs such as sales and use, cigarette and tobacco, alcohol and fuels.

The board also serves as the appellate body for California income and franchise tax cases and oversees the administration of property taxes statewide.

n DISTRICT 4 includes 90 percent of Los Angeles County.

State Assemblywoman Judy Chu, a Democrat from the 49th Assembly District, is running against Republican businessman Glen Forsch, Libertarian certified public accountant Monica W. Kadera and Peace and Freedom Party candidate Cindy Varela Henderson, a telephone technician.

U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: The three local representatives have served in the House for more than ten years.

n DISTRICT 30 includes Santa Monica. Congressman Henry Waxman, a Democrat, is running against Republican businessman David Nelson Jones and Peace and Freedom Party candidate Adele M. Cannon, a certified public accountant.

n DISTRICT 33 includes a sliver of Del Rey from Walnut Avenue to the San Diego Freeway (405 Freeway). Congresswoman Diane E. Watson, a Democrat, has no challenger.

n DISTRICT 35 includes parts of Del Rey, Playa Vista, parts of Playa del Rey and nearly all of Westchester.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a Democrat, is running against Libertarian computer network analyst Paul T. Ireland and American Independent engineer Gordon Michael Mego.

n DISTRICT 36 includes Venice, Mar Vista, parts of Del Rey, Marina del Rey, parts of Playa del Rey and parts of Westchester.

Congresswoman Jane Harman, a Democrat, is running against Republican retired engineer Brian Gibson, Libertarian author Mike Binkley and Peace and Freedom Party candidate James R. “Jim” Smith, an educator and writer.

U.S. SENATE:

n Senator Diane Feinstein, a Democrat, is running against Richard “Dick” Mountjoy, a Republican immigration control consultant; Don J. Grundmann, an American Independent chiropractor; Michael S. Metti, a Libertarian educator and businessman; Marsha Feinland, a Peace and Freedom Party candidate and retired teacher; and Todd Chretien, a Green Party candidate and writer.
