Only a week after setting a world record as the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe alone, Zac Sunderland was named the grand marshal for the 47th Annual Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade scheduled for Saturday, December 12th.

Sunderland, 17, who returned from his record-setting journey July 23rd, will be leading the two-hour parade through the main channel of Marina del Rey. This year’s boat parade theme is “Christmas in Paradise,” commencing at 6 p.m.

“Zac Sunderland was the perfect choice for our grand marshal with his history-making journey around the world,” Holiday Boat Parade President Cindy Williams said.

“He’s an inspiration to every sailor in Marina del Rey and our community is so proud of his accomplishment.”

Sunderland was 16 when he left Marina del Rey on June 14th, 2008 for his 13-month, solo round-the-world sailing adventure spanning 27,000 nautical miles. He escaped pirates, dodged freighters and outlasted squalls to achieve his record.
