Best Friends Animal Society hosts a summer pet adoption festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 4th, at the Westchester Recreation Center, 7000 Manchester Ave., Westchester. Admission is free.

More than 1,000 homeless dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, and parrots from more than 60 rescue groups and Los Angeles shelters are expected to be up for adoption.

“Each animal has its own unique story — some have been rescued from mistreatment or abandonment, some have never known a home other than a shelter or foster home, and all are in need of loving families to adopt them,” said Francis Battista, a Best Friends spokesman.

The summer adoption festival is presented by Pet Ecology Brands of Dallas and co-sponsored by Ralphs, PetCo, the PetCo Foundation, and City Beat.

Activities include a children’s pavilion, the Radio Disney Street Team, all-day dog agility events, Frisbee and fly ball demonstrations, the Shelter Dog Parade, pet psychics, veterinarians, dog trainers, pet-related products and service vendors, a food court, and celebrity guests.

“This is a very powerful event,” Battista said. “It not only impacts the pet overpopulation crisis in Los Angeles and creates public awareness of the problem, but also saves the lives of innocent animals one pet at a time.”

He said last year’s festival resulted in record adoption numbers, with more than 485 animals being adopted.
