A 23-year-old Loyola Marymount University (LMU) student was killed early Thursday, October 18th, when the motorcycle he was riding struck a parked car and collided with a tree at 77th Street and Alverstone Avenue, west of Sepulveda Boulevard, in Westchester, police said.

Jonathan Evans, a Los Angeles resident and senior at LMU, was riding his 1998 Honda motorcycle eastbound on 77th Street at about 4:25 a.m. when the vehicle went off the road, struck a Chevrolet that was parked on the street and collided with a tree, a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman said.

Evans was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center Marina Campus, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Evans was a double major in physics and math at LMU, with a minor in philosophy.

“He was an excellent student and had strong bonds with his professors and classmates,” said an LMU statement.

The university spokeswoman said LMU students, faculty and staff plan to attend a memorial service for Evans Thursday, October 25th, at the Sacred Heart Chapel on the LMU campus.

The service is not open to the public.
