A 39-year-old man was shot to death in Mar Vista early Thursday, March 30th, when he confronted another man who was allegedly trying to break into his car, Los Angeles police said.

At about 3 a.m. John Rocha heard a commotion coming from his apartment carport in the 12600 block of Mitchell Avenue, Mar Vista, and went outside to investigate, police said.

When Rocha went to the carport in the alley behind his apartment building, he saw a man allegedly attempting to burglarize his car, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Pacific Detective Mike DePasquale said.

Rocha verbally confronted the suspect, who allegedly shot Rocha in the upper torso and fled on foot through the alley.

Rocha, a grocery store manager and father of three, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man approximately 18 to 25 years old, who was possibly wearing a hooded sweatshirt, police said.

The motive for the shooting appears to be burglary, but the investigation is continuing, DePasquale said.

No arrests have been made.
