A 49-year-old Venice woman was killed Wednesday, May 28th, after she reportedly lost control of the bicycle she was riding near Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica and was hit by an oncoming vehicle, police said.

The woman, identified as Carolyn Ackerson, was riding her bicycle in the 1900 block of 14th Street at about 3 p.m., when witnesses say she lost control of the bike and veered across two lanes of traffic, Santa Monica police Sgt. Renaldi Thruston said.

Ackerson fell off the bike into an opposing lane of traffic and was struck by a vehicle, Thruston said.

Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and transported Ackerson to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, Thruston said.

No charges were filed against the driver of the vehicle that was involved in the collision, he said. Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department Major Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the accident.
