The filing deadline is Monday, August 1st, for candidates wishing to run in a special primary election in the the 53rd State Assembly District to fill the remaining term of Mike Gordon, who died last month.

The primary election will be held Tuesday, September 13th.

If no candidate receives 50 percent plus one vote of the votes cast September 13th, a runoff election will be held among the top candidates in each political party.

Candidate filing fees are $990 and 40 to 60 nominating signatures are required for filing, according to Conny McCormack, Los Angeles County registrar-recorder and county clerk.

The deadline for filing “signature in lieu” petitions for candidates who agree to voluntary spending limits is Monday, July 18th.

Nomination forms are available at the office of the county clerk, 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Candidates running for the 53rd Assembly District seat must be U.S. citizens, registered voters and qualified to vote for that office at the time nomination papers are issued.

Because of state term limits, candidates seeking the Assembly seat may not have served for three terms or more in the State Assembly since November 6th, 1990.
