An 84-year-old Santa Monica woman died after she was struck by a car that was backing out of a driveway on Tenth Street in Santa Monica Wednesday afternoon May 14th, police said.
The woman, identified as Maria Torrez, was walking on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of Tenth Street, near Michigan Avenue, at about 3:45 p.m. when she was struck by a “medium-size sedan,” Santa Monica police Sgt. Renaldi Thruston said.
The driver of the vehicle was backing out of a driveway and apparently did not see Torrez, he said.
When officers arrived at the scene they found the woman lying unconscious near the street, Thruston said. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene following the collision.
Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics took Torrez to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, Thruston said.
Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department Major Accident Reconstruction Team were called to the scene and investigated the accident.
