Santa Monica Playhouse is presenting the return of the original holiday-themed musical “Absolutely Halloween” with performances scheduled at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, October 24th and 25th, and on Halloween.

“Absolutely Halloween” is the mini-classic tale of the aptly named “Candy,” a sweet young girl who learns some surprising lessons about life, love, laughter and sugar, from an intriguing array of characters who take her on a magical All Hallow’s Eve adventure.

The musical is one in a series of original Rudie-DeCarlo fairy tales that make up the Santa Monica Playhouse’s award-winning Family Theatre Musical Matinee Series for Kids 2 to 102, cutting across the imaginary generation gap by providing an experience the entire family can enjoy, a playhouse spokesperson said.

“Absolutely Halloween” is directed by Chris DeCarlo, with book, music and lyrics by DeCarlo, Evelyn Rudie and Matthew Wrather. The performance features Actors’ Repertory Theatre members Celeste Akiki, Kate Burleigh, Melissa Gentry and Cydne Moore, with special guest appearances by Leah Artenian and Gray Silbert, and Serena Dolinsky as the rascally cat “Cattypuss.”

Other characters joining in the holiday adventure story are Lester the Jester, Fifika the Fortune Teller, Stuffy Steffy and Patty Patches. Costumes are designed by award-winning designer Ashley Hayes, with production design by The Attic Room.

Audience participation is a key element in all Santa Monica Playhouse Family Theatre presentations, and Absolutely Halloween is no exception, as youngsters (and parents, too) aid the denizens of the Halloween World in completing magical spells in no less than five different languages, helping to save All Hallow’s Eve for yet one more year, the playhouse spokesperson says.

Participants can learn the valuable lessons of team spirit, friendship, sharing, making choices and the value of moderation, especially as it relates to treats and sweets, according to the playhouse.

Santa Monica Playhouse is at 1211 Fourth St., one block east of the Third Street Promenade.

Admission is $10.50 for kids 12 and under and $12.50 for adults. Advance reservations are required; call The Playhouse box office at (310) 394-9779 ext. 2.

A Halloween special: come in costume, and get two-for-one tickets to any future Family Theatre production. Free face painting is offered before both shows on October 31st.
