A new community event, Paddle for a Purpose, hosted by three local charity foundations is planned between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday, October 2nd, at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey.

The Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation, The Jennifer Diamond Foundation and The Special Olympics will join county agencies to stage a Kayak Relay Team Race and hot dog lunch at Mother’s Beach. The event benefits children’s programs.

The event will provide kayaks for the relay race.

The public is invited to enter this fundraiser by bringing pledges with a minimum of $60.

Teams will be created from competitors at registration and each team will be given a colored hat to wear to designate their team.

Racers will wear visors and a colored hat and be assigned to a team associated with one of the special needs children on the beach require. The youths are encouraged to root for their color coordinated teammate on the water.

All children will be given medals based on the finish of each kayak team.

Registration for the race begins at 8 a.m.

Children with special needs, physical and intellectual, are invited to attend the morning sessions where representatives of the Sheriff’s Department, county lifeguards and the Marina del Rey Fire Station will volunteer their time for boat and equipment review and rides.

The local Outrigger Club of Marina del Rey will provide rides to these children. Some Special Olympic Athletes will be competing in the outrigger and canoe races.
