Adventure traveler Rich Abele will present “Cruising to the North Pole and Chasing a Total Solar Eclipse” at a meeting of the Airport-Marina group of the Sierra Club at 7:45 p.m. Monday, January 18th in Marina del Rey.

A Sierra Club member for more than 30 years, hike leader, and mountain climber, Abele flew to Helsinki, Finland, to join a 108-member tour on a chartered plane to board Fifty Years of Victory, Russia’s newest and largest nuclear ice breaker, and cruise to the North Pole.

“The presentation will cover polar bear sightings and helicopter landings in Franz Josef Land as well as chasing and experiencing a total solar eclipse off the coast of Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic Ocean,” he said. [Novaya Zemlya is a Russian-held island in the Barents Sea, not open to travelers.] “This is a presentation that you won’t want to miss.”

Abele, who lives with his wife in Westchester, is a retired contracts administrator for The Boeing Company.

The free meeting, featuring refreshments, will be held in the community room of Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
