The City of Santa Monica will hold a grand opening for Airport Park with a community celebration scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday April 29th.

The 8.3-acre Airport Park is at the northwest corner of Bundy Drive and Airport Avenue on the south side of Santa Monica Airport.

The grand opening will feature music from the Belle Air Brass, food from Typhoon Restaurant and the Spitfire Grill, soccer and skill challenges on the three-acre synthetic turf sports field, a ìWalk Santa Monicaî activity around the parkís loop path and a dog-obedience demonstration near the off-leash dog area.

Airport Park is the first new city-built park to open in 24 years. The park is a major component of the cityís Parks and Recreation Master Plan, a 20-year plan adopted in 1997 for over $142 million of improvements to and expansion of the cityís open space system, city officials said.

The city is celebrating the planís ten-year anniversary this year with two new park openings ó Airport Park and the .45-acre Euclid Park on Euclid Street between Colorado Avenue and Broadway. Euclid Park is set to open in mid-June.

Airport Park is served by Big Blue Bus Line 14 and is wheelchair accessible. Automobile parking for the event will be available just south of the new park on the Santa Monica College Bundy Campus (the entrance is on South Bundy Drive).
