Allan Freedman, an active Marina del Rey yachtsman and retired engineer, died Thursday, May 19th, of cancer. He was 71.

He served for many years as fleet captain of the Fairwind Yacht Club, sailing his Hunter 26.5, Collective Effort.

In 2000, he joined Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club and served as cruiser race chair for several years. During that period he sailed his Catalina 27, Freedom Too which, he had restored, from bow to stern.

Freedman retired after 35 years with Northrop Grumman Corporation. At his retirement, he was manager of materials and process research and development and airframe technology.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Erla; two children, Mark Freedman and Holly Fitzgibbons; and two grandsons, Ryan and Evan.

A private interment was planned for noon, Wednesday, May 25th, and a public memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 3rd, at University Synagogue, 11960 Sunset Blvd, Brentwood.
