Longtime Playa del Rey resident Alma “Mickey” Bender passed away Sept. 2. She was 94.
Bender was the much loved matriarch of the Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey, members said.
Bender was born Oct. 23, 1916, near Ramey, Minn.
She became a registered nurse after graduating from training at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
Bender later served as a stewardess for United Airlines from 1939 to 1942, and while working for the airline she met the man who would become her husband, John Bender.
The couple was married for 63 years and Bender was a resident of Playa del Rey for 48 years. She was a member of the Bel-Air Woman’s Club for nearly 40 years.
Bender is survived by her older sister, Ruth Giannotti of Chandler, AZ; and many nieces and nephews and their successor families in the Northwest.
Memorial services are pending.
