The sixth annual Alternative Transportation (AltCar) Expo and Conference, featuring more than 35 retailers of alternative fuel vehicles, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main St., Santa Monica.
Admission to the AltCar Expo is free and open to the public.
The event will showcase alternative technology vehicles, alternative transportation, urban planning, energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction options.
This year attendees will have the opportunity to ride, drive and purchase vehicles at the event.
The expo will also include panels of experts addressing solutions to energy and transportation issues and efforts for future legislation.
More than 35 retailers are expected to participate in the expo, including Chevrolet, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, BMW, Mini Cooper and Toyota, offering their latest models available for test-drive. In addition, many alternative manufacturers such as Coda and Good Earth Vehicles will present their alternative fuel vehicles including electric and natural gas.
Last year’s event drew more than 12,000 people to see vehicles that are now on the market such as Honda GX, Nissan LEAF, Chevy Volt, and Ford Transit Connect Electric.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich will provide the keynote address for the first day of the event, a conference that focuses on alternative-fueled fleet vehicles.
“Driving and vehicle emissions is the topic of heavy conversation in 2011, especially here in Los Angeles County,” said Antonovich. “AltCar is an opportunity for municipalities to learn more about best practices and for the public to gather and discover more about what’s being done in the world of alternative transportation, and what they can take advantage of today.”
Some of the features of this year’s expo will include Toyota’s plug-in Prius with an extended EV mode that will be available for ride and drive; the unveiling of the Fuel Cell Partnership; Mercedes’ B-Class F-CELL hydrogen fuel cell vehicle currently available for consumers to lease; and the world’s first sports luxury plug-in hybrid car – the Fisker Karma- will be on display.
Outside the event showroom, attendees will have the opportunity to drive and purchase some of the most fuel efficient vehicles. Other eco-friendly vehicles like bicycles, mopeds and scooters will also be on display.
A “Focus on Fleets” conference, presented by APWA, NAFA Pacific Southwest Chapter and MEMA, will take place on Friday, Sept. 30.
