The Venice High School Alumni Association presented scholarships ranging from $500 to $16,000 to 29 seniors at the high school’s Senior Awards Night Monday, June 8th.
Boston University, Emory University, UC-Berkeley, UC-Davis, UCLA, Cal State Northridge and Santa Monica College are some of the schools where many of the graduates will be attending this fall.
One of the scholarships that was awarded is in memory of Scott Antolick, a Venice High senior who died of heart complications. His parents, Art and Penny Antolick, gave an annual $5,000 scholarship.
Doris Gilbert, the mother of former Venice High student Laura Jean Gilbert, who died of complications of diabetes in the late 1980s, also presented a scholarship.
Others were awarded in memory of faculty, family and civic associations including: Velma Ott Smith/Blackwood, Leonard Gottlieb, Michael Pomerantz, G.O. Turney, Lois Larson Peterson, Shirley Hall, Bill Paney, Grant Francis, Korean War Memorial, and the Woman’s City Club.
Three scholarships are named for alumni that the association honored earlier this year — Jan Davis, Jeff Shimizu and Hortensia Amaro.
The senior class will graduate on Thursday, June 18th.
