An exhibit of works by seven current and former students in the Art Mentor Program at Santa Monica College will be on display at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica from Thursday, July 28 until early November.

Cultural Abstraction, Contemporary Figurations: The Works of Seven Contemporary Figurative Painters in Santa Monica will open with a reception for the artists from 6 to 8 p.m. July 28 at the Annenberg Beach House, 415 Pacific Coast Highway.

The show will include paintings by artists Francisco Cabas, Quinne Larson, Abdul Mazid, Kathleen Melian, Jessica Nichol, Elizabeth Weber and Elena Wolek. The works explore themes such as cultural identity, gender empowerment, dislocation, consumption, and human regeneration.

The Art Mentor Program is tailored for a select group of art students at SMC who have the opportunity to work intensively with faculty members, visiting artists and fellow students in developing individual bodies of work. The program, housed at SMC’s Airport Campus, includes frequent visits to galleries, museums and artist studios, in addition to focused discussions and critiques.

This exhibition is a part of an ongoing series of the Beach = Culture programs at the Annenberg Community Beach House that includes concerts, readings, and lectures.
